In this dual degree program Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) (Honours) by RMIT University and B.E. Electrical and Electronics Programme by BITS, Pilani, you’ll learn the skills necessary to make useful products and provide quality services by spending time on experiments in laboratory classes and designing projects. In this professionally accredited degree, you’ll learn to design, develop, analyse and supervise the manufacture, installation, operation and maintenance of electrical systems. You’ll also work on systems for the generation, distribution, utilisation, and control of electric power, electronic and control systems used for various domestic and industrial applications.

You’ll develop high-level technical and design skills and focus on a specialist area such as energy conversion, power systems, renewable energy, high-voltage equipment and control engineering.

After completion of this joint degree, you will be able to design and supervise projects and implement new technologies in small and large organisations. The leadership skills you learn from project work will prepare you for management roles.

Electrical engineers work on the systems for the generation, distribution, utilisation and control of electric power systems. They drive the transition to alternative and renewable energy sources.

Electrical & Electronics Engineering is a broad field that encompasses many sub-fields like electrical power generation, transmission, distribution, protection of power system components against faults or abnormalities, solid-state electronics & allied fields. Electrical and Electronics engineers apply the theories of basic electrical engineering, electronics and electromagnetics to design, develop & operate these systems. The undergraduate degree programme provides a comprehensive foundation in the core topics of Electrical and Electronics Engineering coupled with areas of specializations relevant to emerging engineering sectors

RMIT program learning outcomes

Upon completion of BH075 Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) (Honours), you will have achieved the following Program Learning Outcomes. The Program Learning Outcomes have been aligned with recognised standards for Bachelor of Engineering degrees to obtain national accreditation by Engineers Australia.

  • Program Learning Outcome 1: Demonstrate an in-depth understanding and knowledge of fundamental engineering and scientific theories, principles and concepts and apply advanced technical knowledge in specialist domain of engineering.
  • Program Learning Outcome 2: Utilise mathematics and engineering fundamentals, software, tools and techniques to design engineering systems for complex engineering challenges.
  • Program Learning Outcome 3: Apply engineering research principles, methods and contemporary technologies and practices to plan and execute projects taking into account ethical, environmental and global impacts.

Overview of the Program Structure

This joint program requires that students separately and simultaneously complete the program requirements for both BITS and RMIT programs. The academy students will complete their first two years of study in India, in addition to the BITS Pilani curriculum, a small number of RMIT courses will be offered in the first two years of study.

After successful completion of the first two years of study, the academy students will transfer to Melbourne campus and complete a further 2 years study and complete both qualifications. Courses completed at BITS, Pilani will be recognised for credits towards the completion of the RMIT’s (Electrical Engineering) (Honours) degree and vice versa, the completion of prescribed RMIT courses in the final two years will be recognised for requirements of the BITS Pilani B.E. Electrical and Electronics Programme.

In the first two years of the program you will gain a foundation in science, mathematics and engineering, and will be introduced to the fundamental aspects of electrical and electronic engineering in a mixture of theory and practical courses.

Project work will develop your high-level technical and design skills. You will gain communication and teamwork skills and learn how to be a good leader.

Throughout your degree, you will study RMIT STEM Future Technology Skills courses that provide you with a fundamental understanding of the technology mega-trends that will shape your future career.

You must complete a further 192 credit points of study in Melbourne, Australia to meet the full requirements of the RMIT Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) (Honours) degree. In Melbourne, your program structure currently is as follows for years 3 & 4:

In year 3 you will consolidate your learnings from years 1 and 2 and further develop your knowledge and understanding of electrical engineering.

In year 4 you will be provided with a capstone experience in the following courses -OENG1167 Engineering Capstone Project Part A and OENG1168 Engineering Capstone Project Part B- in which you will conduct a research project that can be analytical, experimental, design or computational in nature (or some combination). Graduates of the Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) (Honours) are eligible for graduate and/or professional membership of Engineers Australia.

These committees help inform program development and ensure that the RMIT delivered program content and student learning outcomes in Melbourne remain closely aligned with the needs of future employers. To be eligible for entry to the Academy program you must meet the academic, pre-requisite and English requirements of both RMIT and BITS Pilani.

BITS

Candidates should have passed the 12th examination of 10+2 system from a recognized Central or State board or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) and adequate proficiency in English.

Admission to all the programmes is subject to the conditions given below:

  • The candidate should have obtained a minimum of aggregate 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects (if he/she has taken Mathematics in BITSAT) or a minimum of aggregate 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects (if he/she has taken Biology in BITSAT) subjects in 12th examination, with at least 60% marks in each of the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics / Biology subjects.
    The academic requirements will include your results from the BITSAT test

Applicants must achieve the following results in your high school studies:

  1. Successful completion of the All India Senior School Certificate (AISSC) with minimum average of 65% * or;
  2. Successful completion of the Indian School Certificate (ISC) with minimum average of 65% * or;
  3. Successful completion of the State Boards of Education (Higher Secondary Certificate, HSC) with minimum average of 70% *

To meet the pre-requisite requirement you must complete Mathematics/ HSC Mathematics with a minimum grade of 60% in your AISSC, ISC, State Board HSC studies. Other qualifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

  • To meet the English requirement you will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests:
    • IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)
    • TOEFL (Internet Based Test – IBT): minimum overall score of 79 (with minimum of 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing)
    • Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 58 (with no communication band less than 50)
    • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

Students are required to apply for an Australian student visa at the end of Year 2 at BITS, India. It is important to note that students must meet the student visa requirements.

Tuition fees in years one and two of the dual degrees are payable to BITS Pilani.

Annual tuition fees for students commencing 2024 are:
