The dual degree program Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Honours) by RMIT University and B.E. Mechanical Programme by BITS, Pilani is designed to develop you as a professional and highly employable mechanical engineer, within a national and international context.

Upon completion of this joint Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, you will possess the necessary qualifications to work as a mechanical engineer in various industries worldwide, such as transportation, power generation, mining, material processing, manufacturing, and air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. You will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to undertake roles related to the design, manufacturing, testing, diagnostics, and maintenance of existing technologies, as well as those related to the development of new technologies.

BITS program learning outcomes

BE in Mechanical Engineering covers all fundamental aspects of mechanical engineering, with a mixture of theory, practicals and elective courses. The primary objective of this undergraduate program is to create the manpower for various industrial opportunities related to mechanical engineering. Students are given a flavour of industrial working culture in their second year itself in the form of Practise school, which is unique to the BITS. Additionally, students in their final semester can opt for industrial internships, often leading to pre-placement offers. Moreover, this program ensures the students achieve the necessary preparation for taking up higher-level academic programs.

RMIT program learning outcomes

Upon completion of BH070 Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Honours), you will have achieved the following Program Learning Outcomes. The Program Learning Outcomes have been aligned with recognised standards for Bachelor of Engineering degrees to obtain national accreditation by Engineers Australia.

  • Program Learning Outcome 1: Demonstrate an in-depth understanding and knowledge of fundamental engineering and scientific theories, principles and concepts and apply advanced technical knowledge in specialist domain of engineering.
  • Program Learning Outcome 2: Utilise mathematics and engineering fundamentals, software, tools and techniques to design engineering systems for complex engineering challenges.
  • Program Learning Outcome 3: Apply engineering research principles, methods and contemporary technologies and practices to plan and execute projects taking into account ethical, environmental and global impacts.
  • Program Learning Outcome 4: Apply systematic problem solving, design methods and information and project management to propose and implement creative and sustainable solutions with intellectual independence and cultural sensitivity.

Overview of the Program Structure

This joint program requires that students separately and simultaneously complete the program requirements for both BITS and RMIT programs. The academy students will complete their first two years of study in India, in addition to the BITS Pilani curriculum, a small number of RMIT courses will be offered in the first two years of study.

After successful completion of the first two years of study, the academy students will transfer to Melbourne campus and complete a further 2 years of study and complete both qualifications. Courses completed at BITS, Pilani will be recognised for credits towards the completion of the RMIT’s Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Honours) degree and vice versa, the completion of prescribed RMIT courses in the final two years will be recognised for requirements of the BITS Pilani B.E. Mechanical Programme.

Details of Year 1 and 2 (Taught at BITS, India)

In the first two years of the program you will gain a foundation in science, mathematics and engineering and be introduced to the fundamental aspects of mechanical engineering, in a mixture of theory and practical courses. In the second year you will have the opportunity to experience an industrial workplace by attending the BITS Practice School.

Project work will develop your high-level technical and design skills. You will gain communication and teamwork skills and learn how to be a good leader.

Throughout your degree, you will study RMIT STEM future technology skills courses that provide you with a fundamental understanding of the technology mega-trends that will shape your future career.

Details of Year 3 and 4 (Taught at RMIT University, Australia)

You must complete a further 192 credit points of study in Melbourne, Australia to meet the full requirements of the RMIT Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering)(Honours) degree. In Melbourne, your program structure currently is as follows for years 3 & 4:

In year 3 you will consolidate your learnings from years 1 and 2 and further develop your knowledge and understanding of mechanical engineering.

In year 4 you will be provided with a capstone experience in the following courses -OENG1167 Engineering Capstone Project Part A and OENG1168 Engineering Capstone Project Part B- in which you will conduct a research project that can be analytical, experimental, design or computational in nature (or some combination). The capstone experience will give you the opportunity to integrate, critically reflect on and consolidate what you have learnt in your program.

In addition to this, you will have demonstrated the ability to communicate your ideas in a way appropriate to your profession and to the wider community in general. You will also have demonstrated your ability to learn in a self-directed way that will support professional extension in your working life and that will lead you to adapt through technological and social change. Furthermore, you will have demonstrated your ability to investigate complex problems using research-based knowledge and research methods.

While most courses in the program are delivered on campus, other courses will be delivered via a combination of predominantly online activities supported by some campus-based activities. Most of your classes will take place on Bundoora campus, however some classes will take place at Melbourne city campus.

Engineers Australia is the professional body responsible for the accreditation of higher education programs that prepare students to practise as professional engineers.

Engineers Australia is a signatory to the Washington accord. This means that the degree is internationally recognised, and graduates are able to practise as professional engineers in many countries around the world.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Honours) are eligible for graduate and/or professional membership of Engineers Australia.

BITS- Pilani has gained deep insights into emerging industry trends and skill demands. Since inception, over 500 organisations, including prominent one such as Maruti,  Bosch, JSW Steel, AMNS, Tata Motors, Mahindra Vehicles, GE, SKF, and many others have benefited from the Work Integrated Learning Programmes.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Honours) program has an Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) that advises on the RMIT delivered program and courses in Melbourne. Membership is diverse and drawn from external industry and professional institutions. This committee helps inform program development and ensures that the RMIT delivered program content and student learning outcomes in Melbourne remain closely aligned with the needs of future employers. In addition, academic staff in Melbourne maintain connections with industry to develop and deliver work integrated learning experiences, as well as offer advice on professional careers in Australia.

To be eligible for entry to the Academy program you must meet the academic, pre-requisite and English requirements of both RMIT and BITS Pilani.

BITS

Candidates should have passed the 12th examination of 10+2 system from a recognised Central or State board or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) and adequate proficiency in English.

Admission to all the programmes is subject to the conditions given below:

  • The candidate should have obtained a minimum of aggregate 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects (if he/she has taken Mathematics in BITSAT) or a minimum of aggregate 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects (if he/she has taken Biology in BITSAT) subjects in 12th examination, with at least 60% marks in each of the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics / Biology subjects.
    The academic requirements will include your results from the BITSAT test

Applicants must achieve the following results in your high school studies:

  1. Successful completion of the All India Senior School Certificate (AISSC) with minimum average of 65% * or;
  2. Successful completion of the Indian School Certificate (ISC) with minimum average of 65% * or;
  3. Successful completion of the State Boards of Education (Higher Secondary Certificate, HSC) with minimum average of 70% *

To meet the pre-requisite requirement you must complete Mathematics/ HSC Mathematics with a minimum grade of 60% in your AISSC, ISC, State Board HSC studies. Other qualifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

  • To meet the English requirement you will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests:
    • IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)
    • TOEFL (Internet Based Test – IBT): minimum overall score of 79 (with minimum of 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing)
    • Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 58 (with no communication band less than 50)
    • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

Students are required to apply for an Australian student visa at the end of Year 2 at BITS, India. It is important to note that students must meet the student visa requirements.

Tuition fees in years one and two of the dual degrees are payable to BITS Pilani.

Annual tuition fees for students commencing 2024 are:
